The Role of Speech Therapists

Speech Therapists provide services to preschoolers who demonstrate one or more of the following Speech and Language  delays or disorders:

Language

• Expressive Language - Difficulty using language (e.g., sentence structure, vocabulary, grammar) to clearly and effectively communicate ideas.
• Receptive Language - Difficulty understanding language (e.g., comprehending stories, directions and questions).

• Pragmatic Language - Difficulty using language appropriately during social interactions (e.g., making requests, using greetings, taking turns in conversation, using facial expressions and gestures, etc.)

Speech

• Articulation - Difficulty producing speech sounds within a word; substituting, adding or leaving out sounds.
• Phonology - Difficulty using the sound system of a language; producing patterns of errors that affect whole groups of sounds and persist beyond an expected age.

• Fluency - Difficulty using a smooth rhythm of speech due to the presence of hesitations or repetitions.
