The second season of Perrysburg High School Boys Club Volleyball is about to begin!

 

In January 2022, the Ohio High School Athletic Association (OHSAA) Board of Directors voted unanimously to add boys volleyball as an emerging sport, which means boys volleyball is administered like the OHSAA’s current recognized sports, but has additional requirements according to OHSAA General Sports Regulation 16 that could lead to full sanctioning in the future.

 

A parent started Perrysburg High School Boys Club Volleyball in the 2023 season. Troy Zabawa serves as head coach. Marsha Swanson, who teaches Science at Hull Prairie Intermediate School and played volleyball in college, stepped up as an assistant coach and advisor, as well John Kazmaier and Connor Jones. This season Spencer Kluge takes over as head coach of JV with Connor and Matt Rico as assistants. Emily Dworczyk is the Team Manager.

 

PHS was the only school in the area to host both a Varsity and JV team last season. Four other high schools in the area offered boys volleyball: Anthony Wayne, Scott, Springfield and Toledo Christian. Each team played seven games in the season and participated in the Bulldog Invitational tournament, playing teams from the Cleveland area and southeast Michigan.

 

During the 2023 season, Josh Gilts and Jacob Xiao made the Bulldog Invitational All Tournament team and Trevor Pollock was recognized for play of the tournament. Josh Gilts (MH) made the Ohio High School Boys Volleyball Association District II Region 6 All Stars Second Team and is now studying engineering at The University of Toledo where he was the only freshman to make the A Team at UT this fall.

 

For the 2024 season, games will be held at Hull Prairie Intermediate School in March and PHS in April. PHS will host both a Varsity and JV team again this year. There are twice as many high school boys volleyball teams in the area this year with the additions of Monclova Christian, Northview, Northwest Ohio Classical Academy, Start and Swanton. Anthony Wayne is also hosting a JV team this year.

 

JV is scheduled to play 12 season games as well as play in a Quad and a Tri. Varsity is scheduled to play 18 season games as well as play in a tournament in Michigan.

 

The public is more than welcome to attend the games. Admission is free for Perrysburg Students and anyone with a Perrysburg Athletic Pass, $5 otherwise. Game time is 6 p.m. unless otherwise noted. The schedule is subject to change.
