With two weeks of competition under their belt, the Perrysburg Girls Golf Team has participated in three invitationals and one dual match. In eighteen hole tournament play the Jackets placed 5th at the Notre Dame Invitational, were runners-up at the Sylvania Invitational and placed 4th at the Yellow Jacket Invitational at White Pines.
Sophomore Sydney Deal led the way for Perrysburg with a new school record in her first tournament of the year with a round of -1, 70 at the Eagle Invitational at South Toledo Golf Club. She followed that performance two days later at Eagle's Landing with another one under performance at the Sylvania Invite and then destroyed her own record with a six under 66 at the Yellow Jacket's home invitational.
"Sydney has started the season as strong and consistent as I have ever seen," said Head Coach Rick Rettig. "She has gained length off the tee, but what is most impressive are her approach shots. She is giving herself more opportunities to go low with one-putt birdies versus two-putt pars. It's really fun to watch her make her way around the course."
The Yellow Jackets opened the dual match season last week hosting Wauseon High School, a Division II state qualifying team from last year's state tournament. The Jackets came away with a 177-186 victory. Deal led the way with a -2, 34. Paige Feldkamp followed with 45 and Ariyah Ellis and Oliva Eisaman followed with a 48 and 50 respectively.
The sophomore class is well represented as Feldkamp, Ellis, and Eisaman followed by Sophia Strzesynski are all in the Class of 2024. Senior Summer Boedeker rounds out the lady linksters lineup in the 6th spot.
"As a coach you hope for a team that has a great work ethic and great synergy and we have both. Our girls are low on experience, but they come to compete and improve every day. This will be a fun and exciting season and we'll hope to contend when we step on the course for the NLL Championship next month."
NLL play begins this week when the Jackets travel to Maumee to take on the Panthers.
