PHS hosts Workshop for Science Educators

Science Teaching Advancement through Modeling Physical Science

Perrysburg High School is currently hosting a workshop for science educators. Science Teaching Advancement through Modeling Physical Science (STAMPS) 7 is an Improving Teacher Quality (ITQ) grant that has been awarded to Bowling Green State University for the past seven years. Our STAMPS workshop is a collaborative science teaching methods course where leaders trained in Modeling Instruction lead other area teachers through curriculum in Biology, Chemistry and Physics.

They spend two weeks in July teaching participants how to teach science classes the way scientists do science. PHS Physics Teacher Nate Ash is leading an advanced science curriculum-writing workshop, Kim Layden (PHS) is instructing a first year Chemistry workshop, Sam Evans (Maumee HS) is instructing a first-year Physics workshop and Kristina Newman (Swanton HS) is instructing a first-year Biology Workshop. Dr. John Laird (BGSU Physics), Dr. Tracy Huziak-Clark (BGSU Ed.), Dr. Stephania Messersmith (BGSU Chemistry) and Dr. Eileen Underwood (BGSU Biology) are the university content and pedagogy experts helping to facilitate the workshops.

This year they have 55 participants from all over Ohio, including 5 teachers from Perrysburg. This is the seventh year for the program and the fourth year it has been hosted at Perrysburg High School. Over 200 high school science teachers from Ohio and around the country have come to this workshop over its seven-year history and these workshops have had a direct impact on thousands of science students around Ohio.
