PHS Girls' Tennis Team Takes 2nd Place in Pickerington Doubles Tournament

The Perrysburg High School tennis team traveled to Pickerington, Ohio, for a dual match on Friday with Pickerington Central as well as a doubles' tournament on Saturday. On Friday afternoon the players performed very well despite a 1/2 hour break for thunder.

1st singles player Emma Carter won 6-0, 6-0. 2nd singles player Sydney Onest won 7-5, 6-1 and 3rd Singles player Caitlyn Schankula won 6-2, 6-1. At 1st doubles Kyleigh Henthorn and Gemma Smith won their match 6-0, 6-0 and Maddie Haschak and Natalie Ondrus won 2nd doubles at 7-6, 1-6, 10-5. The team won the match 5-0.

On Saturday, despite the threat of more inclement weather, the girls finished the doubles tournament with their best overall finish to-date. They earned an overall 2nd place finish. Henthorn and Smith finished the tournament as finalists in the highly competitive 1st doubles position. Carter and Onest were the champions in the 2nd doubles position. Schankula and Lydia Ellinger finished in 5th place at the 3rd doubles position and Haschak and Ondrus finished in 6th place at the 4th doubles position.

The varsity team had just one other match this week against one of their biggest local competitors. They took on Notre Dame in a home match at Perrysburg Tennis Center. Last season the girls lost in their final OTCA match against Notre Dame in the team tournament. This year, the girls fought hard to beat their rivals 4-1. Carter beat Patten of ND 6-1, 6-3 at 1st singles. Onest had the best match of the afternoon with a 0-6, 6-1, 6-1 victory over Assenmacher of ND at 2nd singles. Schankula won 6-2, 6-2 over Loeb in the 3rd singles position. Smith and Henthorn dominated in the 1st doubles position with a score of 6-1, 6-1 over Bennett and T. Sturgeon of ND.

Gmitter/E. Sturgeon at 2nd doubles was the only court to go in ND favor with a score of 6-2, 6-1 over Ondrus and Haschak.
