PHS Girls Tennis Team Finishes 3rd in Ohio

The Perrysburg High School 2018 Girls Tennis Team capped off a regular season record of 19-0 to make it to the Final Four Ohio Tennis Coaches Association State Team Tournament in Columbus last weekend. They represented the Northwest Ohio District. Other teams included Olentangy Orange(Central), Mason(Southwest) and Magnificat (Northeast Ohio). On Sunday, October 21, the four teams met at Reynoldsburg High School on an extremely cold day.

Magnificat took on Olentangy Orange and Mason took on Perrysburg in the first round. Mason was ranked #1 all season long in Ohio. In this tournament, after 1 team wins 3 courts, all other courts are stopped. Mason showed their depth by winning 1st and 2nd singles and 2nd doubles all in 2 sets.

Magnificat and Olentangy Orange had a much closer match with the score tied at 2-2. The final match was 2nd doubles that was finally won by Magnificat with a score of 7-5 in the 3rd set.

The finals were played between Magnificat and Mason for 1st/2nd place and Olentangy Orange and PHS for 3rd/4th place. Mason ended up winning the championship match 3-0 over Magnificat.

Olentangy Orange and PHS had a much longer match. The 1st match off for Perrysburg was the 2nd doubles team of seniors Maddie Haschak and Erin Kulmatycki, who lost 6-0, 6-2 to Logan and T. Reed of Olentangy. 3rd singles player Caitlyn Schankula was the next player to finish. She lost a good match 6-3, 6-3 to Sproule. The Jackets needed to win the last 3 courts still playing to win the match. The first win came at 1st singles when senior Emma Carter beat Bhimireddy 6-3, 7-6. 2nd singles player, sophomore Sydney Onest beat Storrer 7-5, 6-4. All of the players, coaches, families and fans were now all focused on 1st Doubles. This match would determine the 3rd place champion. Fortunately, PHS had senior standouts Gemma Smith and Kyleigh Henthorn on this court. Smith and Henthorn closed out their match by winning 6-0 in the final set! Their match score was 6-3, 4-6, 6-0 over Mauger and K. Reed of Olentangy Orange.

The final rankings had PHS jump from 9th place to 3rd place with that final win over Olentangy. The Lady Jackets ended the season with a 20-1 record.
