PHS Select Strings to perform at National Conference & Local Preview Concert

This spring, 27 students from Perrysburg High School Select Strings will travel to Pittsburgh to perform at The American Strings Teachers Association (ASTA) National Convention on Friday, March 3 at 5 p.m. at The David L. Lawrence Convention Center in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. There were hundreds of high school orchestras across the nation that applied to ASTA.

The entire community is invited to a preview of the ASTA performance sponsored by the Boomerang Business Alliance, consisting of Tutor Doctor, Lawn Doctor and Princess Party Productions. Select Strings will perform at The Commodore Beck Auditorium (140 E. Indiana Ave.) on Saturday, February 25, 2017 at 7:00 p.m. with a reception following. This concert is free and open to the public.

“This is a historic accomplishment for the Perrysburg Orchestra program and for the Perrysburg School District to perform at a national convention,” stated Michael Smith, PHS Orchestra Director.

PHS Select Strings were chosen based on a recording of three selections, submitting the past three years of concert programs, a rehearsal video, letters of recommendation and application. PHS Select Strings will perform a one-hour concert that will be adjudicated by a panel of four string judges. The winner of the competition will perform at the Grand Champions Concert on Saturday, March 4 at the conclusion of the ASTA National Convention at 4 p.m. in Pittsburgh.

PHS Select Strings will perform: Allegro for Strings from Op. 1 No. 3 by George Frideric Handel, Largo from Xerxes by George Frideric Handel, Brandenburg Concerto No. 3 in G major by Johann Sebastian Bach, In The Company of Angels for String Orchestra and Harp by William Hofeldt, Suite for Strings by John Rutter, Voices in The Shadows by Brian Balmages and Perseus by Soon Hee Newbold.
