Spotlight on North Carolina State University
North Carolina State University is the largest university in North Carolina, with a population of 33,989 (undergraduate and graduate), located in Raleigh, North Carolina. It is considered a STEM university and has 110+ academic programs within 10 academic colleges. It has the largest textiles program in the country and the 4th largest engineering undergraduate program in the U.S. It has the #1 largest percentage of STEM degrees among land grant universities and in 2014 was ranked by Princeton Review #4 best overall public university for its value.

Since it is a land grant university, only 18% of students can come from out of state. Currently 10% of their students come from out of state. Their acceptance rate is 51.4%. In 2014 there were 4,374 freshmen enrolled, with a weighted GPA of 4.41 and unweighted GPA of 3.66 and average ACT of 28. They do superscore for the ACT, but they do not require letters of recommendation and do not do early action or early decision. Their review process is holistic, which includes: HS courses, HS grades, standardized test scores, enrichment activities and HS class rank (no disadvantage for HS not ranking).

Their merit-based scholarship deadlines are November 1 and January 15. The Park Scholarship is one of their main merit-based scholarships and approximately 40 - 50 are awarded each year. Those offered this scholarship from out of state receive $166,000 for a 4-year award. There is a computer stipend and the emphasis is on scholarship, leadership, service and character. One perk that students enjoy is the opportunity to attend all basketball and football games for free!

Penta - Explore Penta Day

There will be a 10th grade Pre-Explore Penta meeting on October 28 during an Enrichment morning in conjunction with a Naviance demonstration. Students will be given information on the various programs available at Penta and be able to select two programs they would like to see when they visit on Friday, November 6. Many of the programs at Penta now provide transcripted college credit for their career programs as a number of students continue their education at the college level.

Junior Appointments

It's that time of year again when we will meet with our juniors to discuss what their plans are after graduation. Your school counselor will be calling you down during the months of October and November to talk about post-secondary plans, credits towards graduation, College Credit Plus information, ACT/SAT testing and anything else that will help to narrow down what you are planning to do after high school.

Scholarships & Financial Aid

With college application season winding down for seniors, scholarship and financial aid seasons are just warming up!

Searching for Scholarships
  1. The first way to search for scholarships is through the college or university you are planning to attend. Many institutions offer merit aid, or automatic money based solely on your high school GPA and test score. There may also be other scholarships specifically for incoming freshmen that you can apply for. Visit your schools’ web sites and search for “scholarships.”
  2. Another way is through national scholarship web sites such as fastweb.com, scholarships.com or cappex.com. On these sites you can fill out a profile about yourself and they will sort through a national database of scholarships for which you may be eligible.
  3. Finally, we will advertise local scholarships through our offices. A list of scholarships is updated on Naviance throughout the school year. You can find the list under the Colleges tab (look for “scholarship list”). Also, in February every senior should fill out the Local Scholarship Common Application. Filling out this one scholarship application puts you in the running for over 50 local scholarships (including all scholarships through the Perrysburg Schools Foundation).
Financial Aid

Beginning January 1, seniors and their parents can begin filling out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) online. Everyone should fill out the FAFSA, regardless of whether or not you think you will qualify for federal aid. Most colleges and universities have FAFSA deadlines around February 15 - March 1. Then, in March or April you should receive a financial aid package from each college or university in which you indicated interest. These packages will show federal and state grants, federal loans, institutional grants and Federal Work Study money that you have been allotted. We will be providing a mandatory Financial Aid and Scholarship presentation for seniors on Wednesday, November 11 during the Enrichment time (8:30 a.m.). We will be offering a Financial Aid Information Night on Tuesday, December 15 at 6:30 p.m. in the PHS Media Center where we will go over this process in more detail.

College Funding Night

On Thursday, November 5, Perrysburg Schools will be hosting College Funding Night, beginning at 6:30 p.m. in the Perrysburg High School Library. Local financial advisors will be hosting breakout sessions on a variety of topics related to saving for and funding college tuition costs. If you have any questions about the upcoming event, please feel free to contact Lindsay Czech, Director of College Advising at [email protected].

OLWEUS Bullying Prevention Program

We have completed our second class meeting at the High School through the Olweus Bullying Prevention Program to discuss the various issues that students are facing. The first class meeting dealt with setting up expectations within the classroom on how to treat one another during the meeting and the second class meeting began to talk about cliques and what that looks like in Perrysburg and how to bring about more acceptance amongst the groups.

Math in Action Tutoring Hub

BGSU is excited to have received state grant monies to establish and open the High School Math in ACTION Tutoring Hub, which will be available to all students taking high school Math courses such as Pre-Algebra, Algebra I, Geometry, Algebra II, Pre-Calculus, Calculus or Statistics. The Hub is not just for students enrolled in BGSU college courses through College Credit Plus. The goal is to provide extra support to high school students so more students succeed in Math courses and advance toward their academic goals without needing remediation when they eventually go to college. The tutors are experienced and knowledgeable and are working toward their degrees in Education. The center is located in room 120 Olscamp Hall at BGSU and they will offer walk-in/ face-to-face tutoring time from 3:30 p.m.-10 p.m. Monday through Thursday and Sunday from 4 p.m.-9 p.m. Students are encouraged to call the Hub at 419-372-1493 to schedule an appointment but appointments are not required. Students can ask for directions to 120 Olscamp Hall when they call in for their appointment. Parking passes will be available when the student checks in for tutoring.

SOS Tutoring

Students helping Other Students is a peer-tutoring program offered at the High School. This program will begin within the next month and is coordinated by one of our math teachers, Mrs. Mazzarella. This program is designed to assist students who are struggling in one or more core academic areas.
