Student Spotlight
Cruz Vasquez
Incoming 9th Grader
Perrysburg High School

Young man smilingCruz Vasquez made a tremendous impact in representing the Jacket Way at Perrysburg Junior High School. Cruz separated himself as leader in both his extracurricular activities and his academics. As an 8th grader, Cruz was a member of the football team and served as an 8th Grade WEB Leader. It was common for Cruz to be seen leading small group lessons with his 7th grade WEB Group with his outgoing and shining personality.

“Cruz’s attitude in WEB was infectious,” said PJHS Principal and WEB Coordinator Scott Buker. “Cruz would take on any challenge we had for him and is a true leader with his peers.”

In addition to his extracurricular activities, Cruz has been an honor roll student at PJHS. Cruz’s dedication to his studies, his love for learning and growth as a student netted him the annual Glenn McIntyre Perseverance Award given to an 8th grader who demonstrates grit, self-advocacy, overcoming challenges and a desire to grow each and every day.

“In the classroom, Cruz sets goals to challenge himself, for example to read more books and new genres, which has developed into a strong reading habit. Cruz is an outstanding collaborator and often inspires his peers to push their own thinking,” shared Cruz’s Team of Teachers that include Mrs. Casey Hemmelgarn, Mrs. Kelley Treece, Mr. Nick Tonegato and Mrs. Jennifer Krueger.

The teachers shared: “Cruz has outstanding perseverance. At the beginning of the year we all noticed his enthusiasm to learn and his positivity. We are all blown away that these qualities continued to grow and inspire those around him. He went above and beyond to connect with his teachers and fellow students, ask for help and stay ahead academically.”

When Cruz was asked what his favorite subject was, he simply shared: “That’s hard. I love them all!”

Outside of school, Cruz is a member of a youth rugby team and contributes to his youth group at his church.

We are happy to have you at PHS, Cruz!
