New Face in the Counseling Office

Meet Miss Allie Rodenbucher, Mrs. Bihn's intern for the fall semester! She is getting her Master's of Education in School Counseling from BGSU, where she also received undergraduate degrees in Psychology and Sociology. Allie is from the hometown of LeBron James – Akron, Ohio. This contributed greatly to her love of sports, especially basketball. Spending time outdoors, being with friends and family, and traveling are how she spends her free time. Miss Allie is so excited to spend her final semester here at Perrysburg High School and getting to know the students.

Therapy Dog - Tecna
This year Mrs. Sigg will be working with Circle Tail Inc. and welcoming several assistance dogs to our PHS family! Be on the lookout for Tecna, the first of many pups to make us smile!

Recognition Fridays
Starting this school year, Principal Cookson has added a great way to recognize our students as part of the Jacket Way program. We are looking forward to being able to publicly recognize the students we see exceeding expectations to better themselves and the school.
The last Friday of every month will be Recognition Friday, a school wide event. Every teacher will select one student to recognize in front of the class and explain the reason for selection. Selection could be based upon one of the following reasons: academic achievement, teamwork, exemplary behavior, acts of kindness or outstanding attendance. Our goal is to ensure every student has an opportunity to be recognized for a variety of different reasons. We believe in the importance of qualities that not only make a great student, but a great human being. On this day there will also be a student of the month at each grade level selected by one department and a teacher of the month. We look forward to hearing and learning about all the good that students and staff are doing here at the High School!

Seniors - Service Academy Deadlines

Naval - Military - Air Force - Merchant Marines
Senator Sherrod Brown - due Friday, September 17, 2021
Senator Robert Portman - due Friday, September 17, 2021

Seniors may apply to either Senator for any of the academies. For more information on this process, please click on the senator names to visit their websites.

Seniors - Financial Aid

Seniors and their parents/guardians are able to start filling out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) beginning October 1. Completing the FAFSA allows students to receive grants and loans to assist in paying for college. PHS will host a virtual FAFSA/Financial Aid Information Night for the parents/guardians of seniors on Wednesday, September 29th at 7:00 p.m. Please keep an eye on Schoology and your email for more information about this event.

SCOIR

Last year Perrysburg High School introduced a new college planning system called SCOIR (to replace Naviance). We use SCOIR to help students navigate the college selection and application process. Seniors will be required to use SCOIR to request letters of recommendation from faculty and to request the sending of academic transcripts. Freshmen, sophomores and juniors may use SCOIR to build their resume, complete career assessments and search for colleges that may be a good fit for them. Each grade will have an Enrichment meeting on SCOIR this school year.

ACT/SAT Update

One of the biggest changes to the college admissions landscape during the current global pandemic has been its impact on ACT and SAT testing. Tests have been cancelled and registrations have been hard to come by. As a result, thousands of colleges have moved to a test-optional format where ACT/SAT scores are no longer a required part of the college admissions process. To see a complete list of colleges who have moved to test optional, please visit http://fairtest.org/university/optional. If you are a senior and have questions about whether or not you should apply test optional to a college, please see Mrs. Czech.

College Athletics and the NCAA Eligibility Center

All students who are interested in playing a sport in college (NCAA Division I or II) should create an account on the NCAA Eligibility Center website as early as sophomore year of high school. In order to be eligible to play, student-athletes must:
• Complete 16 core courses while in high school, with 10 complete before the start of senior year. You must work with your school counselor throughout high school to ensure that you are taking the right classes.
• For students interested in Division I athletics, a 2.3 core GPA in high school is required to participate in competitions. For Division II athletics, the core GPA requirement is a 2.0. Only courses that appear on PHS’ List of NCAA Courses will be used in the calculation of your core GPA.
• Division I athletics uses a Sliding Scale to match standardized test scores (SAT or ACT) and core GPA. The Sliding Scale can be found at www.2point3.org.
• For more information about this process, including a list of approved courses for PHS, please visit www.eligibilitycenter.org.

Academic Labs/Tutorial Information
Students may need some support with their academics. There are many different resources to help students succeed:
PHS Academic Labs (World Language, Writing, Math and Science)
Khan Academy - https://www.khanacademy.org/
Help in Math, Physics and Chemistry - MONDAY's and THURSDAY's in the Commons Area from 3:30 on with Mr. Steven Kramer. (First table by the School Office.)

Grade Impact

It is so important to do well and maintain your grades. The most important year to begin this process is your freshman year. As you can see from the chart below it must begin early, because if you wait it becomes more difficult to bring your overall grade point average (GPA) up. This chart reflects on how much weight each semester carries in your overall grade.

Grade Impact Chart
Freshman 1st Semester - 100%
Freshman 2nd Semester - 50%
Sophomore 1st Semester - 33%
Sophomore 2nd Semester - 25%
Junior 1st Semester - 20%
Junior 2nd Semester - 16.6%
Senior 1st Semester - 14.3%
Senior 2nd Semester - 12.5%
