Program Spotlight

English Language Arts
Heinemann Boothbay Literacy Retreat

Attendees at the retreatA dozen faculty members and administrators attended the Heinemann Boothbay Literacy Retreat over the summer. A grant partnership with Bowling Green State University and The University of Toledo, under the P3 District Partner Program, subsidized the cost of the program.

For the past ten years, the Heinemann Boothbay Literacy Retreat has helped attendees explore the types of experiences and instruction students need to lead literate lives. Aliteracy: Why Some Kids Won't Read and Write, and What We Can Do To Change That was the focus of this year’s retreat.

During the retreat, attendees worked in small and large learning communities, focusing on such questions as:
• What strategies help our students become responsible readers and writers?
• How do I build classroom libraries, confer with students and keep up with all the reading/writing I should do?
• What does it mean to become a community of readers and writers?
• How do I encourage parent/guardian engagement?

Other topics included helping struggling readers and writers, developing engagement – understanding best practices for tomorrow and discovering tech tools that extend learning.

Sending this team of teachers and administrators from Perrysburg Schools will help us kick off a plan to look at English Language Arts instruction throughout our school district.
