Program Spotlight
Jackets Giving Back
Perrysburg High School

Three students with catIn 2017, a group of Perrysburg High School students approached school leaders with the idea of spending a school day serving the community. From those conversations, Jackets Giving Back was born. Jackets Giving Back is a student-driven volunteer day in which PHS seniors spend their academic day volunteering throughout Perrysburg and surrounding communities. The event this year will take place on Friday, October 19, 2018. All PHS seniors will have the opportunity on this day to volunteer at one of 30 participating organizations throughout the area.

Why is service important?
Teens learning the value of volunteerism:
• Building understanding that there is more to the community than what they experience in their daily lives.
• Self-esteem rises when they see that they have an impact on someone else’s life.
• May set off a chain reaction of regular volunteering, which enriches teens’ lives even more.
• Exposes teens to more diversity.
• Improves communication and critical thinking skills while taking them out of their comfort zone.
• Builds relationships with people who share the cause of helping the community.

Student Spotlight
Natalie Hartland
6th grade
Hull Prairie Intermediate School

Natalie HartlandHave you heard about "Scribble, Scribble, Scribble" at HPI? It is the creation of Natalie Hartland, a current sixth grade student on the Blue Team. According to all of her teachers, Natalie is a voracious reader and a magnificent writer. She possesses a wonderful sense of creativity in her thinking.

Last year, while a fifth grader, Natalie had an idea about starting a writing club for all those students who love to write. When presenting her idea to her English Language Arts teacher, she reasoned: “We have a math club, why do we not have a writing club?” She composed a powerful, persuasive letter to be given to Principal Scott Best. After putting her letter in Mr. Best's mailbox, she waited patiently for a response. Mr. Best loved Natalie's idea, and he was instrumental in adding her class, “Scribble, Scribble, Scribble,” to our Exploratory Rotation for our current year.

The teachers on the Blue Team share in celebrating Natalie's quick-wittedness, creativity and ability to persevere!

“It is a delight to see a student in sixth grade possess and share such individuality in her thinking and her ideas,” shared Susan Stout, Fifth Grade Language Arts, HPI. “The sixth grade Blue Team feels positive that the future will hold many opportunities for Natalie to showcase her brilliance with her creativity and her writing.”

We’re so proud of you, Natalie!
