Welcome to the third quarter edition of the 2019-20 Perrysburg High School Counseling Newsletter! This newsletter is published quarterly and is brought to you by the PHS School Counseling Office and the College Advising Office. New Opportunity - 7 Habits of Highly Effective Teens Workshop
The PHS Counseling Office will be offering a 5-week workshop for interested students covering the 7 Habits of Highly Effective Teens. These sessions are being held once a week and began January 15. Future dates are January 28, February 11 and 18 during periods 4, 6, 8 and 10 in the former Media Center. Students may attend during their lunch or study hall. Attendees will learn valuable life-long skills such as how to prioritize and being proactive. Interested students can sign up by clicking here.

 

 

Course Registration - NEW PROCESS
The process for registering for classes has changed. Registration meetings will take place at the High School on February 3, 4 and 5 in English classes. On February 7, all applications will go live and students will be able to select their classes (Core and Electives). On February 19, registration will close at 3:00 p.m. for all electives. All applications are due to teachers for classes with that prerequisite. There will be NO SCHEDULE CHANGES.

Give Kids a Smile Dental Clinic
In collaboration with the Toledo Dental Society, Owens Community College is offering Give-Kids-A-Smile Program for “at-risk” children ages 6 months -18 years at the Dental Clinic on Friday, February 7, 2020.
The services will include at no charge:
• Dental Education
• X-rays
• Dental Screening
• Oral Prophylaxis (cleaning)
• Dental sealants
• Limited restorations (fillings) at no charge as triaged by the dentist
• Patients who need further dental treatment may be assigned a local dentist to complete dental treatment or seek treatment at the Dental Center of Northwest Ohio
If you are interested in participating in this event please call to schedule an appointment at the Owens Community College Dental Clinic at 567-661-7294. Make sure to identify interest in Give-Kids-A-Smile Day on February 7.

Junior Parent Night
An informational night for parents and guardians of current juniors will be held Thursday, February 13 at 6:30 p.m. in the PHS Auditorium. The purpose of this presentation will be to go over the college admissions process including information about signing up for the ACT and SAT, going on campus visits, applying to colleges and searching for scholarships. Don’t miss this opportunity to kick off your child’s journey to college!

College Preview Night
College Preview Night will be held on Wednesday, March 11, from 6:30 to 8:00 p.m. at Owens Community College. This is your chance to talk with representatives from more than 100 colleges and universities in Ohio, Michigan, Indiana, Pennsylvania and more! There will also be presentations on how to get financial aid, plan for college and prepare for the ACT.

Volunteer/Service Opportunities
There are many opportunities to volunteer within our community. If you would like more information on how you can make a difference in your community, join one of the school clubs that focuses in on serving others and volunteering - the Interact Club and Key Club. This is their primary focus and they can provide many resources. If you would like to learn more about these clubs the advisor for Interact Club is Mrs. Camp and the advisors for Key Club are Ms. Burks and Mrs. Notestine. 

College Credit Plus Program
Students have the opportunity to earn college credit while in high school through the College Credit Plus program. PHS held an informational meeting for those interested in CCP on December 2. Attendance at this meeting AND completed paperwork with respect to mandatory deadlines are required for any student planning to take college courses through CCP the following school year. If you were unable to attend the meeting, a video has been posted on the PHS web site for your review. If you have any questions about this program, please contact your school counselor.

Summer Enrichment Opportunities
If students are looking for ways to learn more about future career possibilities or to experience what life is like living on a college campus, they are encouraged to investigate a summer enrichment opportunity! There are a multitude of programs available all across the country in different career fields. A list of the programs PHS has been notified about can be found here but students are also encouraged to seek out their own programs or look through national search tools such as TeenLife.com. If there is a college a student would like to visit, they may check that school’s web site for a summer program as most offer at least one. Be sure to look into these soon as many have deadlines throughout January and February!

Scholarship Information for Seniors
A list of scholarships is updated on Naviance throughout the school year, although January and February are the months with the highest volume of scholarships available. You may find the list under the Colleges tab (click “scholarships & money” then “scholarship list”). Also in February, every senior will be able to fill out the Local Scholarship Common Application. Filling out this one scholarship application puts students in the running for over 50 local scholarships (including all scholarships through the Perrysburg Schools Foundation). Keep an eye out for more information about the application in February! Finally, be sure to check the Toledo Community Foundation web site for their numerous scholarship opportunities! www.toledocf.org

 

 

Scholarship Opportunities for DREAMers
TheDream.US Scholarship is open to all undocumented students who came to the United States before November 1, 2014. Deadlines are coming up soon, so please be sure to follow the links below for more information.
– The Opportunity Scholarship, an up to $80,000 scholarship, for students who live in targeted, locked-out states where they cannot get in-state tuition will be closing on January 30, 2020.
– The National Scholarship, an up to $33,000 scholarship, for first-time college students or community college graduates will be closing on February 27, 2020.

A medical illustrator is a professional artist with advanced education in both the life sciences and visual communication. Many medical illustrators produce illustrations for books and journals, while others act as art directors and producers of a broad range of work from animations and patient education programs to advanced computerized training simulations.

Where do they work?

Approximately one third of medical illustrators are self-employed. Other medical illustrators work at medical schools, hospitals and clinics, research institutions, medical publishers, law firms, advertising agencies, web/animation firms and other creative services businesses.

Salary

The median salary for a medical illustrator / animator in the U.S. is $70,650 and can range up to $173,000.

How can I prepare to be a medical illustrator?

High school students contemplating medical illustration as a career should take a college preparatory program with as much emphasis on art and science as possible. In college, students should concentrate on art and biology.

The majority of medical illustrators in the profession have a master's degree from an accredited two-year graduate program in medical illustration. There are currently four programs in North America that are accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Each program accepts 20 or fewer students each year, so entrance into the schools is very competitive. These four programs are Augusta University, The University of Illinois at Chicago, Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine and University of Toronto.
