Changes to Face Covering Requirements

We are doing our best to implement changes to our back-to-school plan as research emerges and rules change. At this time, we are modifying the face covering requirements we previously shared. The entire summary may be accessed at this link, with recent changes highlighted: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1OOj2MOIH-3eW0pNK8OoYSr7nAjhPlPbZx9KHhNycyCc/edit?usp=sharing.

These are the primary changes at this time:

  • We have learned that bandana-style/neck gaiter face coverings have been found to be ineffective, and so we have made a change that these types of face coverings are not permitted.
  • Knitted or fleece masks are not permitted.
  • Medical/disposable face masks are permitted.
  • Masks are allowed to be used by preschoolers, but they are not required.
  • We are planning to provide face shields for students in Kindergarten through 4th grade that may be used in lieu of their face coverings while in the classroom if a face covering would hinder the learning process.

Here is the guidance provided by the Ohio Departments of Education and Health for the use of face shields in schools in all grade levels:

  • When interacting with students, such as those with disabilities, where communication could be impacted.
  • When interacting with English-language learners or when teaching a language.
  • Settings where cloth masks might present a safety hazard (e.g. science labs).
  • For individuals who have difficulty wearing a cloth face covering.
  •

Thank you for your patience and adaptability as we chart this course together.

Sincerely,
