Blanco’s Anti-Bullying Program Open to Public Sept. 15
Books available for pre-order for book signing as school fundraiser
Perrysburg Schools will welcome Jodee Blanco, one of the country’s foremost voices on the subject of school bullying, on September 13-15 to give a presentation entitled It’s Not Just Joking Around!™ Ms. Blanco is the author of The New York Times bestseller, Please Stop Laughing At Me… One Woman’s Inspirational Story and the award winning sequel, Please Stop Laughing at Us. State Bank, the Presenting Sponsor, made this visit possible.
“I had the pleasure of seeing her three years ago at a conference in Chicago,” explained Perrysburg Junior High Principal Brent Swartzmiller. “She spoke of her experiences as a student dealing with bullying. In a breakout session, she expertly detailed what to do and what not to do when speaking to students about bullying. It was powerful and demanded reflection of how we interact with students and families.”

Ms. Blanco will present to students and faculty throughout her visit, which will culminate in a Community/Family Talk at Perrysburg High School (13385 Roachton Road) on Thursday, September 15 from 7 to 8:30 p.m. The event is free and all members of the public are welcome to attend as space permits.

The Parent/Family Seminar is an enlightening interactive workshop for parents and their children. It is designed to deepen their understanding of each other and improve the way in which they communicate. Ms. Blanco describes the warning signs a child may be a bully or a victim, how to intervene successfully, how to deal with the parents of the bullies and/or victims, how to work productively with the school, why some children are targeted by bullies more than others, how to spot the warning signs a child may be suicidal due to bullying or may be contemplating violence, how to help that child create an interim social life until issues at school can be resolved and other critical information.

A book signing will be a part of the employee and public presentations as a school fundraiser, with all profits going directly to the school from local independent bookstore Gathering Volumes. Books may be reserved ahead of time using the links below, and will be available first come, first served while supplies last at the event.

True stories from New York Times bestselling author Jodee Blanco's tours

Have you ever felt alone, as if no one understands what you're going through, and that no matter how hard you try, you're scared things may never get better? Do you wish your classmates would give you a break? I felt that way often in school. I was bullied and excluded for the same reason maybe you or someone you know has been--simply for being different. There were days when all I wanted was to stay in my room. Back then, I would have given almost anything to meet the kids you're going to meet here.

Autumn dreaded recess. Joshua was afraid to trust anyone at home or at school. Taylor had lots of friends until her BFF turned them all against her. Gabe's online gaming world was turned upside down when other players started humiliating him. A teacher was bullying Brianna. Eric's Asperger's made him the butt of cruel jokes. The cool crowd beat up Tiffany and videotaped it for YouTube. Zach got punched and stomped on because of his weight. Trinity felt invisible. Aamina was harassed because of her family's religious beliefs. Riley had to live with the soul-crushing weight of mental illness as well as the other students who jeered at her plight.

These are some of the brave teens who will be talking to you in this book. They--and others they inspired--found the courage to stand up to their bullies and reclaim their lives, and you'll hear exactly how they did it.

You're not alone anymore.

While other children were daydreaming about dances, first kisses, and college, Jodee Blanco was trying to figure out how to go from homeroom to study hall without being taunted or spit upon as she walked through the halls.

This powerful, unforgettable memoir chronicles how one child was shunned—and even physically abused—by her classmates from elementary school through high school. It is an unflinching look at what it means to be the outcast, how even the most loving parents can get it all wrong, why schools are often unable to prevent disaster, and how bullying has been misunderstood and mishandled by the mental health community.

You will be shocked, moved, and ultimately inspired by this harrowing tale of survival against insurmountable odds. This vivid story will open your eyes to the harsh realities and long-term consequences of bullying—and how all of us can make a difference in the lives of teens today.

As a sequel to the 'New York Times' bestseller 'Please Stop Laughing at Me...', the 2007 release of Jodee Blanco's 'Please Stop Laughing at Us...' received deserved attention for demanding an end to school bullying
once and for all, and for supplying parents, educators, and targeted students with the tools and skills needed to do so.

In this 2011 revised edition, 'Please Stop Laughing at Us...One Woman's Inspirational Story Continues' includes the same powerful message that Blanco is respected and known for, with new material, including strategy guides for parents and educators, new material, including a Q&A for parents and educators, updated information on university bullying in light of recent news events, and a touching epilogue.

'Please Stop Laughing at Us...' is the story of America's rejected and bullied students from the perspective of the one person with unprecedented access to the truth about what's going on in our schools. Blanco exposes both the strengths and vulnerabilities of a nation too clouded by rhetoric and self-defense to understand what really needs to be done.
