Information on the Nov. 3 Permanent Improvement Levy

Dear Residents,

At the June 15, 2015 meeting, the Perrysburg Board of Education voted unanimously to place a 1.9-mill, five-year permanent improvement levy renewal on the November 3, 2015 ballot. The current five-year levy is set to expire on December 31, 2015 and the Board is asking voters to renew the expiring levy at its current rate.

The purpose of this letter is to explain the Board’s action and to inform voters. This permanent improvement levy is designed to preserve our community’s school buildings, replace aging buses and enhance safety at Perrysburg Junior High and Perrysburg High School. We appreciate the community’s continued support and work hard every day to accomplish our goals of ensuring students achieve their greatest potential while maintaining solid fiscal stewardship. Following is some background information that you may find helpful.

  • This is not a new tax.
  • This levy renews a five-year 1.9-mill levy passed in 2010, which expires at the end of the year. The rate will remain the same. It will collect approximately $1.5 million annually and will continue to cost the owner of a $200,000 home $9.70 per month.
  • Permanent Improvement funds can only be used for maintaining buildings, purchasing buses and educational equipment. They cannot be used for salaries or the day-to-day operations of the school district.
  • Without this levy, money for such things as repairs, buses, boilers and roof maintenance would come from the general fund, leaving less money to continue our educational program.
  • Perrysburg Schools first passed a permanent improvement levy in 1980 and has renewed it every five years since that time.
  • Money from this levy will protect community property values by maintaining Perrysburg Schools, making our school buildings safer and more efficient.

As a result of the community’s continued support over the generations, Perrysburg has remained a destination district. This has contributed to keeping property values high and homes in the district very desirable.
