PHS earns Awards at WorldStrides Heritage Festival
On April 6-10, the Perrysburg High School Concert Band and Wind Ensemble traveled to Boston, Massachusetts, to take part in the WorldStrides Heritage Festival. Perrysburg joined 28 other band, orchestra and vocal ensembles from Connecticut, Maryland, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Quebec and Utah, in competition over two days. Their performances were held at Masconomet High School, and adjudicated by a distinguished panel of judges who gave an overall rating based on the quality of each performance.

In addition to the festival performances, the bands took part in several sight-seeing activities throughout Boston and the surrounding area, including the Freedom Trail, Bunker Hill Monument, Prudential Center Skywalk Observatory, Faneuil Hall Marketplace, Plymouth Rock, Plymouth Plantation tour and a performance by the Boston Symphony Orchestra.

The Concert Band and Wind Ensemble received the following awards:
  • Wind Ensemble - Gold 2nd in class 3A, and the Adjudicator Award
  • Concert Band - Gold 1st in class 2A, and the Adjudicator Award
  • Both groups received the Instrumental Sweepstakes Award, for receiving the highest combined score closest to 200 points, for two instrumental groups from the same school.
Finally, the festival gives one Ovation Award, selected by a committee of festival staff and based on director recommendation, to a student who goes above and beyond and is a positive role model for his or her music program. Out of hundreds of students in 29 performing ensembles participating in the festival, this award was given to our principal trumpet in Wind Ensemble, Stephen Strouse.

Congratulations to all the students on great performances and a great trip to Boston!
