Perrysburg Schools News Article

Yellow Jacket Girls Golf

The Perrysburg High School Girls Golf Team traveled to Stone Ridge Golf Club in Bowling Green last Tuesday for the Division I District Championship. Sydney Deal, Kennedy Kersten, Maggie Mikolajewski, Ariyah Ellis and Olivia Eisaman represented one of the youngest teams in the field and finished 7th out of 10 teams.

At the end of the day, however, it was Perrysburg freshman Sydney Deal who found herself on top of the leaderboard firing an even par 72 and winning the district championship by three strokes over Napoleon's Riley Kleck and Lexington's Amanda Ruminski.

While finishing with an even par round was impressive, Sydney found herself two over par on two different occasions in the tournament.

"I don't think I have ever seen a young lady who can so confidently refocus when things aren't going quite right," said Head Coach Rick Rettig. "She was two over after four holes and made the turn at one over. Then, she had back-to-back bogeys on the second nine and she just put her foot in the ground and seemed to say, no more. She just started to dial-in her approach shots on the back side of the second nine and her putter closed the deal. She's the best putter I've ever seen on the high school level."

"It felt amazing to win the district championship and I did not expect to win going in," Sydney remarked after the tournament. "During the round, I was trying my best to not think about going to state, but it was hard. Towards the end of the round I didn’t know I was going, I knew I was close with Riley, so I wasn’t sure how others were playing. All I knew is I was playing some of the best golf I’ve ever played and I am so thankful to have made it to the State tournament."

The Ohio State Girls Golf Championship to be held October 23-24 at Ohio State University's Grey Course.
