4-Year Varsity Tennis Players lead the Team

Perrysburg High School tennis players Emma Carter, Gemma Smith and Caitlyn Schankula have collectively earned three NLL Team Championships, four state honorable mention awards, numerous sectional and district 1st team awards and a 4th place team award in State in 2016, among many other accolades.

All three of these players have competed well at both singles and doubles over their four-year high school careers. They have done well individually but have more importantly been a part of a strong group effort to help their team excel.

All of them have been encouraged to pursue sports and activities outside of tennis.

Emma Carter has also been a four-year varsity Lacrosse player and will be competing at the Division 1 level for The University of Maryland, Baltimore County next year. She has enjoyed learning sign language at PHS and would like to pursue a career in elementary education in the future. She has enjoyed taking the Teaching Professions program at the high school.

Caitlyn Schankula has competed in water polo and excels at the piano and foreign languages. She plans to study Chemistry and French in college.

Gemma Smith has traveled with her mother all over the world as well as competed in horse back riding and gymnastics. She has also enjoyed taking piano lessons and learning both German and Latin. Gemma would like to study International Business and play tennis in college.

This week the varsity team improved their overall record to 12-0 with wins over Anthony Wayne, St. Ursula and Wapakoneta. In the Anthony Wayne match, Emma Carter beat Kailyn Szmania 6-2, 6-1 in the 1st Singles division. Sydney Onest beat Elizabeth Seiple at 2nd Singles 6-3, 6-0. Caitlyn Schankula finished 6-0, 6-3 over Grace Skilliter at 3rd Singles. Kyleigh Henthorn and Gemma Smith beat Ashley Hartzell and Kassidy Pittman 6-1, 6-0 at 1st doubles. Natalie Ondrus and Megan Smith pulled out a thrilling 3-set match by winning 6-2, 3-6, 6-3 to help cement a 5-0 team victory against NLL rival Anthony Wayne. All 7 players remain undefeated in NLL matches this season.

Next week the Jackets will take on Central Catholic, Bowling Green, Southview and Ottawa Hills as well as travel to Lexington for a 12-team, high-level tournament.
