UT Scope Program visits Microbiology classes at PHS

The University of Toledo’s Scope Program recently visited Ryan DeLauter’s Microbiology classes at Perrysburg High School!

UT brought access to a scanning electron microscope (SEM). Cassandra Pittman and a colleague from UT came to the classroom, set up a free program on the teacher’s computer that is connected to a projector to connect to the microscope's operating software. The microscope uses the software to control it, so the students were able to do anything that a researcher on campus could do, outside of physically loading the samples. The other laptop/projector setup was used to videoconference with a scientist on campus at the microscope. They helped with focusing, loading samples, etc.

“We are so grateful to The University of Toledo's Scope Program and Cassandra Pittman for bringing this hands-on experience to our students,” shared Ryan DeLauter. “The students were very engaged in the activity, which gave them the opportunity to see various cells and bacteria outside the pages of the textbook. Also, students were able to gain exposure to the research done at the college level, which showed them an example of what real-world work could look like if they continue with Microbiology as a career.”
