Governor Closes All Schools for 3 Weeks

Good Afternoon Families, Employees and Community Leaders,

As Governor Mike DeWine announced this afternoon, all schools in the state are required to close after the school day on Monday, March 16, 2020 for at least three weeks to slow the spread of coronavirus 19 (COVID-19). At this time, we will plan for school to resume on Tuesday, April 7. We also must recognize that the Governor could extend the duration of this closure.

Perrysburg Schools will be in session on Friday, March 13 and that will be the last day for students until Tuesday, April 7. Students should not report on Monday, March 16.

All faculty and staff members will report on Monday, March 16.

We understand that there will be many questions from families and employees. Over the next several days, we will be working very hard to share answers as we have them, such as how we will continue to provide students who rely on the school meal program with food while we are closed. Also, learning will continue to take place during this time but it will be very different.  Many of our answers to issues like these will be dependent on direction from outside agencies such as the Ohio Department of Education, the Ohio High School Athletic Association and state and local health departments. We will send updates to employees and families as we have them available.

A change of this magnitude may be particularly upsetting for children. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has compiled a resource page that you may find helpful as you talk about this crisis with your children: https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/community/schools-childcare/talking-with-children.html

As the Governor reminded us, we will get through this together and things will return to normal. We know that families and employees will be facing many different types of struggles during this time. There is no easy way to move forward given the challenges we face today. The Governor’s words were stark and outlined a major fight ahead for all Ohioans. At our employee kick off at the start of the school year, we talked about how, in the Navy, there is an expression, “Hold Fast.” In the old times of sailing ships, sailors working aloft in the rigging in stormy conditions had to hold fast to the lines or fall into the ocean. As a community that bears the name of one of the Navy’s greatest heroes, we too must “hold fast” until the storm passes.

Sincerely,
Thomas L. Hosler
Superintendent
Perrysburg Schools
