Stop the Bleed

Stop the Bleed is a hands-on training designed to impart the knowledge and confidence needed to provide emergency assistance to someone in a life-threatening situation until help arrives.

Perrysburg Schools has engaged in several opportunities with Stop the Bleed trainers. Three sessions were offered to employees this school year and there are plans to offer at least three more next school year. Over 115 employees have been trained so far, including teachers, paraprofessionals, administrators, bus drivers, food service staff, nurses and athletic trainers. Stop the Bleed kits have been purchased for every school building in the district, as well as the transportation, central office and technology facilities. The kits are housed with employees who are trained, as well as a few centrally located within the buildings. Universal signs were created to alert visitors and employees to where the kits are stored (see illustration). The Junior High Parents Organization purchased additional kits to supplement the grant-funded kits the school district was able to secure.

Emma Rohrs
PHS Class of 2019

Graduating Senior Emma Rohrs was recognized by the Association of Two Toledos for her outstanding achievement in the study of Spanish language and culture at its 42nd Annual Awards Program. The Association of Two Toledos is a sister-city relationship between Toledo, Ohio and Toledo, Castilla-LaMancha, Spain forged to advance cultural awareness and appreciation. Emma completed Spanish 5 AP this year and earned the Seal of Biliteracy for demonstrating a high level of proficiency in English and Spanish. Emma was also Spanish Club president for the last two years.

“Emma is a gifted language learner who has stood out since her freshman year,” shared Melanie Lyons, Spanish Language Teacher, Perrysburg High School. “I can honestly say that her desire to learn and use Spanish is second to none. She immersed herself completely from the beginning. Her love of people, appreciation of diversity and her willingness to help others made her a natural leader in the classroom.”

Interesting fact: PHS Spanish Language Teacher Melanie Lyons also earned this award as a senior in 1987 from her Spanish teacher. At that event, her teacher said to her: “You would be a great Spanish teacher!” and that was the reason she decided to major in Spanish.

“The event changed my life,” she said. “This Award is so special to me and I am so proud that Emma was selected. Nobody is more deserving.”

Emma will be attending the University of Toledo. She will be majoring in Biology and Spanish.

Hull Prairie Intermediate School

 

Mrs. Jennifer Mitchell, M.S., 6th Grade ELA Teacher at Hull Prairie Intermediate School, was recently honored to be admitted to the Apple Distinguished Educators (ADE) Class of 2019. In 1994, Apple created the ADE Program to recognize K-12 and higher education pioneers who are using Apple technology to transform teaching and learning in powerful ways. Celebrating 25 years, the program has grown into a worldwide community of over 2,800 leaders in education.

She will attend a training in Bethesda, Maryland called Apple Institute in July for all South, Central and North American individuals who were accepted into the Apple Distinguished Educator Program Class of 2019, which is about 100 educators.

The iPads used in Mrs. Mitchell’s application video came from funds secured by the Perrysburg Schools Development Department four years ago through a direct gift, after she proposed how she would use iPads with her students to enhance learning.
