Sophomore Parent College Planning Night

Sophomore Parent College Planning Night will be held in the PHS Library on Monday, March 21st at 6:30 pm.

This presentation will focus on the college admissions process. Topics to be covered include: college admissions tests (ACT/SAT), what colleges look for in an application, scholarships, financial aid and college visits. It is never too early to start preparing!

Career Day

PHS will host a Career Day on April 15, 2016 for students of all grade levels. Freshmen and Sophomores will attend four different presentations at the high school given by our alumni, parents and community members. Prior to spring break, students will receive a survey to select sessions from approximately 50 different careers. Presenters are from all disciplines—everything from Agricultural Sciences and Veterinary medicine to Business Marketing and Music Performance.
Juniors and Seniors also have a variety of options.
1. Students are encouraged to plan this day as a College Visit day or Career Visit (job shadow) day. Students can select any college of their choice to visit and attend on their own with their families. For attendance purposes, students must complete and turn in a PrePlanned Absence form for these visits.
2. A second option is to take a tour of BGSU or UT with the PHS staff. Students will be riding the bus to either one of these campuses with our staff members. Buses will leave PHS around 10:00.
3. A final option is to participate in a Real Money Real World activity at PHS. This hands-on, active experience will prepare students to make better financial decisions. This presentation is being provided by The Ohio State University.

Juniors and seniors will be sent a survey in the near future to finalize their option for the day. Questions and comments can be forwarded to Christin Lee, School Counselor, at [email protected].

ASVAB

Perrysburg High School will be offering the ASVAB career assessment to interested juniors and seniors on April 18 and 19, during the 2 hour delay time scheduled for testing for the younger grades. No class time will be missed. This is a 3 hour test broken into 2 parts. The assessment is to help students find a college major and career path. Although the ASVAB is coordinated by the Department of Defense, PHS has selected not to share scores with the military. If you would like to register for the test or get more information, please contact Mrs Czech at [email protected].

Decision Day

May 1 is the date most seniors must inform colleges of their plans to enroll. This year we will be celebrating our seniors’ decisions to attend college on Friday, April 29th. On this day, we ask seniors to wear a t-shirt from the college they are planning to attend. If a senior is not planning to go directly to college after high school, they are encouraged to wear a shirt from their favorite college sports team. Seniors are then invited down to the Media Center during lunch for a FREE lunch. So get your college t-shirt ready and we will see you there!

Seniors - Scholarship Letters

Reminder to seniors - please bring in copies of ALL scholarship award notifications you have received, (even from schools you are not planning to attend), to the Counseling office by Friday, April 29. These scholarships will be listed in the graduation program. Individual dollar amounts will not be listed but a grand total will be announced for the Class of 2016.

Service Academies

Interested in learning more about the application process for the Air Force, Military, Naval, and
Merchant Marine Academies? United States Senators Sherrod Brown and Rob Portman will be sponsoring an informational session about these opportunities on Tuesday, May 3 from 6:00-8:00pm in room 207 of the Bowen-Thompson Student Union at Bowling Green State University. Please RSVP if you are planning to attend by calling an Academy Coordinator at (1-800-205-6446) or (1-888-896-6446 then press 1).

Summer Enrichment Opportunities

We have reached the time of year when we start to get numerous notifications from colleges and universities about their upcoming summer enrichment opportunities. These are extremely valuable experiences where high school students have the opportunity to participate in academic programs on college campuses. Some include the opportunity to live in college residence halls throughout the session. In an effort to keep you informed about these opportunities, we keep an updated list of links for these programs on our website - http://www.perrysburgschools.net/SummerEnrichmentPrograms.aspx.

You can look through these links and select a program that might be of interest to you based on location of the program and area of interest. We hope you will consider participating in one of these fabulous programs!

Changes Coming to College Admissions Process at Elite Schools

Back in January, the Harvard Graduate School of Education released a report called “Turning the Tide.” This report, signed by more than 50 elite colleges and universities, aims to reduce the stress surrounding the college admissions process. The report is asking college admissions offices to de-emphasize admission components such as standardized test scores and advanced placement classes and instead place more emphasis on “the common good” and looking at a student’s contributions to family and community. It remains to be seen how admissions offices will put these suggestions into practice but in the meantime, this is an exciting and positive shift.

UPS Earn and Learn Program

If you are worried about paying for college, consider UPS! UPS offers tuition assistance for their part-time workers. Employees can earn $5,250 in assistance per calendar year with a lifetime maximum of $25,000.
