Extended Standards lead to More Meaningful Inclusion

Over the past year, our teachers who instruct students on extended standards have created curriculum maps, paced their standards and developed units of study. According to the Ohio Department of Education, these standards help to ensure that students with significant cognitive disabilities are provided with multiple ways to learn and demonstrate knowledge. The extended standards are aligned to our general education standards.

“This work has also allowed for more meaningful inclusion,” Sara Stockwell, Ed.S., Executive Director of Pupil Services, explained. “By understanding the connection between the extended standards and Ohio's Learning Standards, teachers are ensuring that students are learning the same topic/standard and participating in meaningful activities alongside their typical peers.

Bravo, teachers! Thanks for your hard work!

Student Spotlight

Miller Zachel
8th Grade

Miller Zachel“Miller is one of the kindest and most outgoing students I have ever taught,” shared Wade Kuns, Social Studies Teacher. “He never fails to say hello and goodbye at the beginning and end of each class. He is also a phenomenal student, highly engaged during class, and always willing to help out his classmates.”

“He has an infectious optimism that captures all who are blessed to work with him and know him,” shared English Teacher Kelley Treece. “Miller embodies each aspect of The Jacket Way every day. His work ethic, collaborative skills, ability to persevere and problem solve elevate him as a leader among his peers. I am inspired by him daily.”

“I have had Miller as a student in my classroom and as a runner on the cross country team the past two years,” Matt Ferguson, Social Studies Teacher, shared. “Simply, Miller is a class act. He always gives his best no matter the task. He leads by example through his work ethic and interactions with his peers. He is a leader mature beyond his years.”

“Miller’s overwhelmingly best quality is his kindness towards others,” shared Science Teacher Corinne Roach. “He always participates in class and offers viewpoints to challenge his thinking and understanding, as well as those of his peers. He's a very patient, kind leader in his lab group. I appreciate that I can trust Miller to always do the right thing.”

“Miller always puts others first!” shared Jackie Derr, STEM Teacher. “When he went to H.I.P.P. camp, he was always the one who would stay back, talk to the quiet student and next thing you know he'd have the student engaged and participating! He's a true leader.”

“Miller is one of the hardest working, and most respectful students I know,” shared Kraig Bentley, Band Teacher. “If someone needs help or something needs done, Miller is the first to volunteer. He's a very talented musician and will succeed in anything he does.”
