Guidelines for Classroom Copying
With the advent of high speed, low cost copying process, xerography has become an almost essential educational tool. Copyrights are or should be of concern to educators. Copyright laws, effective January, 1978, caution educators to stay within the copying regulations. Congress has put into law a series of guidelines on the "fair use" of copyrighted materials in education.
Single Copies
A single copy may be made of any of the following by or for a teacher at his/her individual request for his/her scholarly research or use in teaching or preparation to teach a class:
l. A chapter from a book
2. An article from a periodical or newspaper
3. A short story, short essay, or short poem, whether or not from a collective work
4. A chart, graph, diagram, drawing, cartoon or picture from a book, periodical or newspaper
Multiple Copies
Multiple copies (not to exceed in any event more than one copy per pupil in a course) may be made by or for the teacher giving the course for classroom use or discussion--provided that:
1. The copying meets the tests of brevity (less than 200 words for a poem; less than 2,500 words for an article, story or an essay) and spontaneity as defined below:
2. Each copy includes a notice of copyright
Spontaneity
l. The copying is at the instance and inspiration of the individual teacher (but shall not be used to substitute for purchase of books, publisher's reprints or periodicals, and should not be directed by a higher authority).
2. The decision to use the work and the moment of its use are so close in time that it would be unreasonable to expect a reply to a request for permission.
Cumulative Effect
l. The copying of the material is for only one course in the school in which the copies are made.
2. No more than one short poem, article, story, essay or two excerpts may be copied from the same author, nor more than three from the same collective work or periodical volume during one class term.
Duplication Services
Xerographic copying machines are located in the Teachers' Workroom on
both the first and second floors and in the office. The office machine is
for use by teachers before 7:30 or in the event of a breakdown of the other
machines. The machines should be treated with care. The present machines
have the capability of reduction, two sided copying, and sorting. In order
to conserve paper, please reduce the material and use both sides of the
paper. There are two machines at each location to reduce the volume on the
large copiers. The small copiers are high speed and of equal quality but
you can not copy two sides, reduce, and you are limited to a single 8 1/2
x 11 original. These small copiers are designed for the higher volumes and
should be used when ever possible rather than the large copier. If you experience
difficulty with either machine, please ask for assistance from the library
staff (first floor workroom), or the office personnel (second floor workroom).
